Meet George, The Flying Zambini. George is a squirrel. He is cunning, dexterous and perpetually hungry. I've gotten to know George quite well over the last month, while in self quarantine...

As a small nonprofit organization, it is rare that we are able to purchase important historical documents or objects. We rely almost entirely on those who wish to donate these items, and more often than not, the owners of these items choose instead to sell these items at auctions. Recently however, we were able to use some of the funds raised by the massively successful Kingsberry challenge to purchase two very important pamphlets, allowing us to share them with researchers and the public.
Our collections surrounding the fight for equal suffrage for women includes resources devoted to opposing the right to vote for women.
Join us on April 8th for a free jazz concert at the museum! The talented students at William Penn High School will be putting on a fantastic performance that you do not want to miss. If you're planning on attending, you can find out how to register by expressing your interest here: https://fb.me/e/2WIpfWrbV
Happy one-year anniversary to digital.dehistory.org! It’s amazing to think that it’s been a whole year since we launched this incredible platform, which has helped us preserve the rich history of our community and make it accessible in new and exciting ways.
We wanted to share a newspaper article from our collections today that gives a snapshot of women's suffrage, or, the right to vote, in Delaware 40 years after that right was secured. The article details the champions and detractors of the movement and even includes a rather complicated figure from Delaware history, Emily Bissell, someone we will talk more about in a future post. The author (rather comically, in our opinion) discusses the legacy of several elected men who opposed suffrage in the state - in these cases, a swift removal from office by losing the vote.
We recently had the incredibly powerful opportunity to witness Claymont students experiencing our Journey to Freedom Exhibit and student-created portraits of the Claymont 12 on display at our museum. We think that their expressions speak for themselves!
