Robert Lowery developed an original method for teaching improvisation. Considered the father of Wilmington jazz, he taught and inspired a generation of musicians. His students included trumpeters Clifford Brown and Gerald Chavis, and saxophonist Ernie Watts.#BlackHistoryMonth
Pauline A. Young was a teacher, librarian, and lecturer, and activist in Wilmington. She lectured extensively about Delaware's Black history and published numerous bibliographies and book reviews. #BlackHistoryMonth
William H. Furrowh was a World War I veteran and civil rights activist. He was an active member of the Wilmington NAACP and organized a Wilmington division of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), enlisting around 400 members. #BlackHistoryMonth
The society’s paid summer fellowship program for high-schoolers is now accepting applications for Summer 2021! Harry N. Baetjer III Junior Fellows combine seminar readings and discussion with hands-on projects across the Society. This year the program will offer a hybrid of virtual and onsite experiences for optimal public-health safety.
